"We've arranged a global civilization in which the most crucial elements...profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster."
Carl Sagan (1934-1996)
YES I Can! Science ...an assertion that anyone with the desire, interest, or just simple curiosity can learn about, and understand, Science.
Simply stated, the primary objective of yesican-science.ca is to:
The primary work of the yesican-science.ca team is to encourage interest and understanding of Science in the formal K-12 education system, and to foster a culture of scientifically literate, life-long learners.
The YIC Team builds and maintains a searchable database containing exemplary resources which both teach and explain all aspects of Science. Although the yesican-science.ca database is ideally cataloged for K-12 curriculum alignment, its easy-to-use search capabilities make it ideal for locating the latest information about practically any Science-related topic. Best of all, the resources come with instructional units, background material, teaching and learning activities and assessment tools. The yesican-science.ca team designs and creates many of the resources in the database to facilitate the public outreach objectives of our partners and sponsors.
The yesican-science.ca team also creates exciting resources based on current events for inclusion into the yesican-science.ca database. We design and deliver online projects that connect students around the world with scientists and engineers working in the field. Our projects can virtually bring experts right into classrooms.
Launched in 1996 by team members Dr. Thomas Stiff and Diane Hammond, working under the direction of Project Manager Susan Stiff, the project began as a full scale national database funded by Industry Canada. The web site was designed to host educational materials which would support the Pan-Canadian Framework of K-12 Science Outcomes and to promote and improve science literacy. Materials in the database are created to assist teachers in the daunting task of staying current, relevant, accurate, and interesting.
The team maintains the project through corporate sponsorships and outreach contracts.
We encourage participation and/or sponsorship from individuals, institutions, or organizations who wish to help promote high standards of science literacy in Canada.
